VISOVAC, a small island in the broader part of the Krka Canyon (Visovac Lake), about 6 km upstream of Skradin. Visovac Lake is the habitat of the endemic species of lake trout and carp, inhabiting the shallow parts of the lake. Angling is one of the main recreations.
Situated within Krka National Park, between two beautiful waterfalls, Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap, Visovac attracts many excursionists. It can be visited either within an organized boat excursion from Skradin, or individually by boat from a monastery which collects visitors on the side where Drnis lies, near the village of Bristane.
Visovac was first mentioned in 1400 as a hermitage. Franciscan monks settled there and built a church in 1576, which was reconstructed in the 18th century. The monastery, with a rich collection of religious items, paintings (16th-19th c.) and folk costumes, is situated near the church; the most valuable exhibit is the incunabulum of Aesop's fables from 1487 printed by the printer from Lastovo, Dobric Dobricevic.
