VELI RAT, a village and small harbour southwest of the western coast of the Dugi Otok island. Main occupations are farming, fishing and tourism. The vast cove of Saharun lies to the southeast of Veli Rat, and a lighthouse stands on the entrance in the Maknare Strait, southwest of the cove.

Veli Rat, a nice small resort in the extreme northwest of the island of Dugi Otok, situated on the coast of the Cuna cove in the bay of Soliscica, represents an ideal destination for a peaceful holiday. The pines, sand beaches, intact nature and beautiful sea are distinctive features of Veli Rat and its surroundings. This part of the island has rich fishing grounds and offers fine opportunities for yachting. There are several smaller taverns in the town.

The area of Veli Rat has been populated ever since the Roman period. The present settlement was first mentioned in 1327, the year when the church of St. Anthony was built, subsequently reconstructed on several occasions. The Baroque church of Our Lady of Karmen from 1679 is situated in nearby Verunic.
