Preko is a traffic, communication and administrative centre of the island of Ugljan. Although it is situated on the island, due to its closeness of Zadar and regular ferry lines (only 30 minutes drive), Preko has all features of a suburban zone.

Preko has a long tradition in tourism. The Promotion Society was active as early as the period between the two world wars. In terms of tourism, Preko comprises the surrounding villages of Sutomissica, Poljana and Osljak on the island of the same name. The most attractive location for tourists is a beach on the wooded island of Galovac, only 80 m from the centre of Preko. Preko has a number of very good restaurants. Numerous folklore and entertainment programs are organized during the tourist season, the most popular being the so-called Prijeska Legrica, a traditional folk feast.

The Romanesque church of St. John the Baptist dates back to the 12th century. The Baroqueparish church from the 18th century has an altarpiece by Franjo Salghetti-Drioli. On the hill (265 m) above the town is the large mediaeval fortress of St. Michael from the 13th century, erected by the Venetians around the former Benedictine monastery and church. The fortress offers a nice view on the group of islands in front of Zadar.
