VRANSKO JEZERO (Vransko Lake), a freshwater lake in the central part of the island of Cres; comprising an area of some 5.8 sq km.
The lake valley is formed in the zone of crumbling cretaceous dolomites. Vransko Lake is a cryptodepression; the average water level is 16 m above sea level, and the bottom of the valley 68 m below sea level. It provides water for the waterworks of the islands of Cres and Losinj. Vransko Lake is the natural habitat of freshwater fish: pike, tench, rudd, pearl roach and eel.
