About the town

Once merely a small pier for fishing boats of the fishermen from Govedari, Pomena is today the tourist centre of the island of Mljet...

POMENA, a village and small harbour in the cove bearing the same name, on the western coast of the island of Mljet. In the 19th century it was called Pomina. Main occupations are farming, fishing and tourism.

In front of the cove is the islet of Pomestak. The cove provides an excellent dock for yachts.

Once merely a small pier for fishing boats of the fishermen from Govedari, Pomena is today the tourist centre of the island of Mljet. Hotel Odisej is located in a nice, forested cove, surrounded by islets. It offers various sports and recreational facilities; visitors are offered bicycles, canoes and surfboards; yachting and diving workshops are also organized. There are also hiking opportunities.

An easy stone-paved trail from Hotel Odisej, through a century-old forest of Aleppo pine, holm oak and Mediterranean underbrush, will take you to Malo Lake (distance 200-odd m). A nudist beach is provided on the islet of Pomestak.
